RECENT RESULTS FROM THE CASA-MIA EXPERIMENT The Utah-Michigan-Chicago Collaboration

چکیده
Results from the CASA-MIA cosmic ray experiment are presented. I discuss the apparatus and its performance, including new results on the identification of the shadows of the sun and moon used to determine the angular resolution. Limits on the emission of 100 TeV v-rays from the Crab Nebula are well below extrapolations from TeV observations. A search for diffuse "),-rays from the Galactic plane give limits approaching some recent predictions.

Casa-blanca: a Large Non-imaging Cerenkov Detector at Casa-mia
The lateral distribution of Cerenkov light at ground level records important information on the development of the air shower which produces it. We have constructed a Broad Lateral Non-imaging Cerenkov Array (BLANCA) to measure this lateral distribution at the CASA-MIA air shower detector in Dugway, Utah. Together, the arrays can sample the lateral distributions of electrons, muons, and Cerenko...
متن کاملDetection of the Rf Pulse Associated with Cosmic Ray Air Showers
A project to detect the radio-frequency pulse associated with extensive air showers of cosmic rays is described briefly. Prototype work is being performed at the CASA/MIA array in Utah, with the intention of designing equipment that can be used in conjunction with the Auger Giant Array proposal.

متن کاملElemental Composition of Cosmic Rays near the Knee by Multiparameter Measurements of Air Showers
The small change in the spectral slope of the overall intensity of cosmic rays near 1 PeV may be associated with the endpoint energy of supernova shock acceleration. A crucial test of this connection and other ideas of the origin of the spectral ‘knee’ is the reliable determination of the variation of elemental composition in this region. Recent measurements at the DICE/CASA/MIA air shower inst...

The possibility of detecting point sources of cosmic rays with energies above 10 14 eV has stimulated the construction of air shower arrays which distinguish between electrons and muons. Showers started by gamma rays should contain fewer muons than those initiated by hadrons. Thus by measuring separately the electron and muon content of showers, it should be possible to reject many originating ...
